Hiking in the Wasserfallen Region

When you step out of the gondola at the top station, you’re already at an elevation of 925 meters. That makes quite a difference. Instead of a one-hour hike uphill, the hike starts right at that elevation and, if you’d like, ends with a ride back down to the valley instead of leaving you with sore knees.

The trails are marked according to Swiss standards and lead in all directions. Short loops lasting about an hour are perfect for an afternoon. If you have more time, take one of the longer loops over the Hinderi Egg, the Vogelberg, or the Chellenchöpfli. For a full day, combine several ridgelines into one loop. The Chellenchöpfli is the spot that makes the climb especially worthwhile. On clear days, the view stretches across the entire Mittelland all the way to the Alps. On clear days in the fall and winter, when the air is dry and the haze has lifted from the Mittelland, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau stand out sharply on the horizon. Anyone who’s ever been up there when the fog closes in below and the peaks rise above it will definitely come back.

Along the way, you’ll pass mountain inns at Waldweid, Vogelberg, and Hintere Wasserfallen. Not all of them are open every day, so it’s worth checking the opening hours if you’re planning your route around a specific stop.
